Principal Sand's Letter

Welcome to Sycamore Canyon School!

On behalf of the entire Sycamore Canyon School community, I welcome you for what will prove to be a most rewarding and successful educational experience for every student entering our campus. Students, their parents, and staff will work diligently to make the most each day in a culture of shared dedication and excitement for new learning opportunities. Getting kids to believe in themselves, providing each learner a challenging curriculum, and collectively enjoying a “fun” and meaningful school environment will yield remarkable outcomes.

In this 2011 - 2012 school year, we will demonstrate our school’s mission to, “…foster a safe, collaborative, and innovative K-8 learning community that enables its students and staff to strive for excellence in academics, citizenship, creative expression, and physical fitness.” We will demonstrate such striving through identified core values. Upon completion of their tenure at Sycamore, we expect students to demonstrate proficiencies in academic excellence, citizenship, communication, research and technology, and wellness.

Students in primary grades will develop a foundation of the skills for learning. The will foster greater appreciation for classmates' and their ideas, and how we learn and grow together. Students in the upper elementary grades will also discover new perspectives about ideas and concepts, use writing to develop their own viewpoints, and participate in numerous classroom and school activities to stretch them beyond our Standards-based curriculum. These students and their counterparts in grades 6-8 will develop increasing success as critical thinkers.

Sycamore Canyon’s middle grades students will continue their learning and scaffold such knowledge with rigorous curriculum, excellent social skills, and school-based and community outreach opportunities which will unlock doors of opportunity in high school and beyond. Students will have access to enrichment opportunities in academic challenges and competitions, the visual and performing arts, and via our technology academy, in addition to athletics and School Spirit events between the middle schools here in the Conejo Valley -- East Ventura County.

The staff and I take our responsibility to create and maintain a safe and exemplary learning environment seriously. With supportive parents and the greater Ventura County Community, we will succeed in providing the enriching elements and activities, which encourage, inspire, and acknowledge the best in each of us. Please truly partner with us.

Respectfully,

Dr. Jon Sand
